Have you ever returned to a motorcycle or car parking lot only to find a wet wipe draped over your vehicle’s mirror or handlebars? If so, never touch it with your bare hands. What looks like ordinary trash or a prank could actually be a deadly trap set by criminals.

Recently, a new criminal scheme has emerged that targets drivers, particularly women. The perpetrators deliberately place foreign objects, such as wet wipes, on parts of the vehicle that the owner is sure to touch. These aren’t just any wipes; they’re strongly suspected of being laced with dangerous chemicals or high-dose sedatives.

This modus operandi works in two ways: first, through skin contact, where the chemicals are absorbed through the pores when you try to remove the wipe. Second, the pungent odor of the substance, inhaled when the hand is close to the face, can cause dizziness and even immediate loss of consciousness.

When the victim faints or becomes disoriented, that is when the perpetrator strikes. This scheme not only targets valuables such as vehicles, cell phones, or wallets but also has the potential to lead to more severe physical violence.

Self-Defense Steps

Crimes often start with small, seemingly trivial things. If you find a suspicious object in your vehicle, take the following steps:

  1. Use a tool; do not use your bare hands. Remove the object using another item, such as a piece of wood, a twig, or an umbrella.
  2. Stay alert; don’t let your guard down. Perpetrators usually watch from a distance to see if their bait works.
  3. Head to a crowded area. If you feel like you’re being followed or start feeling dizzy, immediately go to a crowded place or the nearest security post.
  4. Stay vigilant; always check your vehicle’s condition before getting close, especially when in a secluded parking area.

Remember, safety is the top priority. Don’t let curiosity or the urge to clean up put you in danger. Stay alert wherever you are!
