As the year draws to a close, public enthusiasm for celebrating Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026 (Nataru) usually goes hand in hand with an increase in shopping and digital transactions. However, behind this convenience lies the lurking risk of cyber security.

The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has officially issued a warning to the public to be more vigilant against the rampant scams that take advantage of the year-end holiday season.

  1. Latest Scam: Dangerous “Christmas Greetings”

One of the most significant threats to be aware of is the sending of Christmas or New Year's greetings accompanied by .APK file attachments. If you receive a message from an unknown number sending a document with the .APK extension, whether it is disguised as an invitation, photo package, or greeting card, do not click or download the file. Clicking on an illegal .APK file can give scammers full access to take over your mobile device, drain your bank account, and steal your personal data (phishing).

  1. Fake Discounts and Promotions

In addition to the .APK file method, cybercriminals also take advantage of people's consumerism at the end of the year with various tempting offers, including Fantastic Discounts & Flash Sales or unreasonable price offers through social media.

  1. Fake Shopping Links

Websites that look very similar to official e-commerce platforms but aim to steal credit/debit card data.

  1. Gift Sharing & Donations

Scams disguised as year-end prize draws or fake humanitarian fundraisers are also increasingly prevalent around Christmas and New Year.
