QRIS is no longer limited to payments within Indonesia. Through QRIS Cross-Border, Indonesians can make payments while travelling in several partner countries using participating Indonesian payment applications. Users simply scan a compatible QR code at participating merchants, allowing them to make digital payments without having to rely entirely on cash.

As of August 2026, QRIS Cross-Border has been connected with six partner countries: Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and China. This connectivity provides an alternative payment method for Indonesian travellers when making transactions at participating QR-enabled merchants in these countries.

The process is relatively simple. While in a partner country, users can open a participating Indonesian payment application and scan the QR code displayed by an eligible merchant. The transaction value is automatically converted, while the user's funds are debited through the payment application being used. Conversely, visitors from partner countries can also use their domestic payment applications at QRIS merchants in Indonesia.

The development of QRIS Cross-Border also reflects growing cross-border payment activity. Bank Indonesia recorded 17.8 million inbound QRIS Cross-Border transactions worth IDR 6.2 trillion through August 2026. Meanwhile, outbound transactions reached 5 million transactions worth IDR 1.85 trillion. These figures show how digital payment connectivity is increasingly supporting people travelling across countries.

As QRIS Cross-Border connectivity continues to expand, Indonesians have a more convenient digital payment option when travelling to partner countries. For Indonesian MSMEs, the system also creates an opportunity to accept payments from international visitors using participating payment applications from partner countries. This development contributes to a more connected digital payment ecosystem and stronger cross-border economic connectivity.
